例如：But for the English test，I would have gone home this week. 要不是英语测试，我这个礼拜就回家了。 这里的but for, 如果换成同学们更加熟悉的虚拟条件句，即是 If there wasn’t the English test, …这样的虚拟语气，对于考生来说几乎没有难度。

需要注意的是，除了but for（要不是）以外，能够表示虚拟条件的词和短语还包括：but that（要不是）、without（没有）、otherwise（否则）、or（不然）等。
